Awareness, Integration, Mindfulness
Ocean Spirit Yoga classes are an integration of the classical yoga teachings of 5000 years ago and present day conditions and needs. All Ocean Spirit teachers are certified and trained in Classical Yoga, following the 8-limbed path of Patanjali’s Raja Yoga, or royal yoga. An often asked question is, “what style of yoga is this?” Hatha Yoga, under the umbrella of Raja Yoga, emphasizes postures, a more familiar understanding of yoga in western society. Although each practice will include postures, they may also include Bhakti Yoga (yoga of devotion), Karma Yoga (yoga of action), Jnana Yoga (yoga of knowledge) and Dhyana Yoga (yoga of meditation).
The “style” of yoga in Ocean Spirit Yoga classes leads students to the common definition of yoga, “to yoke”, “to join”, a “union of body, mind and spirit”. Through a disciplined practice, students may realize that what they learn on their mat they practice in everyday life, with equal importance. While gaining strength, flexibility, and balance there is also a practice of letting go – of expectations, fixed ideas, habitual patterns, desires. Recognition of how one lives in relationship to each other and to the environment comes with an awareness of how one is in relationship to oneself.
